Saffron The spice Saffron is collected from a fall blooming crucus. Crocus Sativus, commonly called 'saffron crocus'. The crimson stigmas known as threads are collected and dried; These dried threads are used as a culinary seasoning. It should be sweet, floral, and earthy in flavor. Saffron that taste bitter or metallic are often imitaters of this unique spice and should be avoided. It's also the world's most expensive spice, selling up to 5,000 US dollars per pound. You need approximately 75,000 flowers to yield one pound of saffron threads, combine that with the fact that harvesting the threads need to be done manually is why this spice is so expensive. I personally can't confirm the following but Saffron is believed to be high in antioxidants, improves mood, libido, and sexual function, as well as reduced PMS symptoms and enhanced weight loss. Do you use saffron in your dishes, have you ever grown saffron?
